INDIANAPOLIS- Hi again to all who read my blog. I greatly appreciate the readers that I have. I have come up with an idea to create a weekly newsletter/newspaper of my own called the "Big Hits Weekly". I plan to have it come out every Tuesday starting this week. The first issue of it should be ready to come out late Wednesday night, but I cannot promise to post it on my blog. If you would like a copy sent to your email weekly then leave me a comment with your email address and name. Thanks again.

IU a win a way from a bowl

By Justin Albers
basketballss132002@yahoo.com
INDIANAPOLIS- I have one question. Where is the world are all the IU haters who asked why they don't just get rid of the football program in Bloomington? Don't look now but the Hoosiers are 5-4, and 3-2 in the tough Big Ten conference. IU beat Michigan State 46-21 on Saturday in what was a real but whooping. Redshirt Freshman QB Kellen Lewis threw 5 touchdown passes and ran for one more to help the Hoosiers move within one win of bowl eligability. The remaining schedule leaves games at Minnesota and Purdue, and at home against #2 Michigan.

Offense rolls, Irish win in convincing fashion

By Justin Albers
basketballss132002@yahoo.com
INDIANAPOLIS- It was the one thing Notre Dame lacked this season; the convincing win. They have had the miracle comebacks, and the wins that cover the spread, but they had yet to beat anybody bad. That changed Saturday when the Irish put a 38-14 beating on the Midshipmen of Navy.

The scoring started quickly for the Irish as they marched down the field on the opening drive, but stalled and settled for a field goal. Navy's offense had Notre Dame confused with their option style, but failed to connect on a field goal that would have tied the game. Notre Dame took advantage of the Navy mistaked, driving 80 yards on 9 plays to take a 10-0 lead. The scoring play was a 36 yard pass from Brady Quinn to David Grimes in the corner of the endzone.

The Midshipmen would answer with their first drive of the second quarter where they put together a 9 play 80 yard drive of their own to cut the lead to 10-7. The Irish offense would not dissapoint though as it only took them 3 minutes to drive 76 more yards, and a 16 yard run by Travis Thomas gave Notre Dame a 17-7 advantage. Just when it looked like maybe Navy was slipping away, they went on a 13 play drive that covered 65 yards, and with 2:43 to go in the first half they were back within a field goal. As we all know, Brady Quinn and the Irish offense love the 2 minute drill, and they had a perfect one in this game. They traveled 80 yards in 7 plays this time, on a drive that took just a minute off of the clock. The scoring play was a 33 yard pass from Brady Quinn to Rhema McKnight and gave the Irish a 24-14 halftime lead.

The Notre Dame defense stepped it up and stopped the Navy offense on their first half of the second half. When the Irish got the ball back they went 69 yards on 9 plays, capped off by a 19 yard touchdown scamper by Brady Quinn. Notre Dame took a 31-14 lead into the 4th quarter and looked to build on it.

The Notre Dame defense finally figured out how to stop the option in the 3rd anf 4th quarters, and held the Midshipmen scoreless for that entire period of time. There was only one scoring play in the 4th quarter, and that was the 6 yard touchdown pass from Brady Quinn to Rhema McKnight with 9:36 remaining in the game. On the other times that the Irish had the ball they let their 2nd stringers play and rested their starters who had earned a 38-14 victory.

Notre Dame Record: 7-1
Next Up: North Carolina (1-7) on November 4th

Key Players: Notre Dame
Brady Quinn 18/25 295 yards 3 TD 0 INT
Darius Walker 20 carries 103 yards 0 TD
Rhema McKnight 6 rec 94 yards 2 TD
David Grimes 3 rec 72 yards TD
John Carlson 5 rec 75 yards 0 TD

Key Players: Navy
Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada 2/5 25 yards, 19 carries 42 yards 2 TD
Reggie Campbell 14 carries 81 yards 0 TD
Shun White 4 carries 44 yards

Irish Report Card

Rush Offense-----------B+
It was a big game for the Notre Dame offense, and the rushing game finally got going again. Walker was able to rush for over 100 yards after being held to just 43 in a close call last week against UCLA. The rush offense still has a long way to go, but it looks like it is improving.

Pass Offense------------A
Brady Quinn made smart decisions, and good passes, and he looks like he is getting the confidence back that he lost early in the season. He was very sharp in all aspects, and looks to be back on the list for Heisman. The passing game continues to get better, and it looks good when the whole team is clicking.

Overall Offense----------A
The Notre Dame offense exploded against Navy on Saturday, looking the best that they have since the 41-17 thumping of Penn State early in the season. The offense was definately clicking, which is good to see after the game against the Bruins a week ago.

Rush Defense------------B
The rush defense would have gotten a "D" if they played only a first half on Saturday. Navy was running all over Notre Dame in that first half, but they shaped up in the second half and shut it down. It is hard to face an option team when you are not used to seeing it. I thought that the defense played it very well once they saw it a few times, and made good adjustments in the second half to shut it down.

Pass Defense-------------A
If you play Navy and your pass defense is not an "A", then there is something seriously wrong with your team. Navy passed it just 7 times in the game, for a total of 43 yards. Navy is a rushing team, so there is not much to rate the pass defense on in this game.

Overall Defense----------B
Even though they turned it around in the second half, the Notre Dame defense looked very weak in the first half in which they were man handled up front. They still have a lot of work to do with the defense, but judging by the adjustments made at halftime it looks like they are on the right track.

An overview of a College Football Saturday

By Justin Albers
basketballss132002@yahoo.com
INDIANAPOLIS- Saturday will pose some key matchups, with most of the good games coming early in the day. Here is a look at the best 5 matchups of the day.

#5 Texas @ Texas Tech
It's a battle of in state rivals in which the Red Raiders of Texas Tech have a chance to ruin Texas' national championship hopes. This game could be close and come down to the final quarter, but I see the Longhorns stepping up to the challenge and controlling Texas Tech.
Final Score: Texas 44 Texas Tech 17

#8 Tennessee @ South Carolina
There is a reason why this game is on ESPN primetime. This should be the game of the day, with the Gamecocks having a good shot since they are at home. Tennessee is coming off of a close win against Alabama and are likely to be upset. I think the Volunteers will answer the call and remain in the hunt for a BCS bowl.
Final Score: Tennessee 27 South Carolina 20

#19 Oklahoma @ #23 Missouri
This is the only game of the day in which ranked teams will square off against each other. I think it will be a close game, but with the fact that this game is played in Missouri and Adrian Peterson is out for the Sooners, I see a big Tiger win.
Final Score: Missouri 30 Oklahoma 20

Miami (FL) @ #21 Georgia Tech
We all know about the Hurricanes. This is their "thugs" first game back after a drawn out 1 game suspension for their roles in the FIU brawl. Georgia Tech will be ready for Miami and beat the crap out of them. There is plenty of motivation there for the Yellow Jackets.
Final Score: Georgia Tech 38 Miami 13

Michigan State @ Indiana
These two teams are going to be fighting like anything to get a win. Both teams need 2 more wins to become bowl eligable, with pretty tough remaining schedules. The winner of this game could very well be on their way to a bowl, something that would be a step in the right direction for 2 struggling programs. I think the Hoosiers will play with more passion and come up with a close victory.
Final Score: Indiana 34 Michigan State 31

St. Louis takes 10th Series

By Justin Albers
basketballss132002@yahoo.com
INDIANAPOLIS- Let me start by apologizing. I apoligize to my dad, the Cardinal players, and the city of St. Louis for ever doubting that the Cardinals could win the World Series this year. I didn't give them a chance of even winning a game in the playoffs, and boy was I wrong. St. Louis was tough and had guys step up to become the champions of the baseball world.

JJ's Picks for College Pickem, and Breakdown

By Justin Albers

INDIANAPOLIS- It's that time again. Another Friday means we are just a day away from another great week in college football. This week will pose some interesting matchups, with a few ranked teams playing one another. Below is the way I see it.

Friday, October 20th

#4 West Virginia @ UCONN

Saturday, October 21st

Indiana (4-3) @ #1 Ohio State (7-0)

#5 Texas (6-1) @ #17 Nebraska (6-1)

I see Texas getting it done, even if it is on the road. Nebraska is a quality ball club, but the Longhorns seem to have found their stride and are playing strong behind young quarterback Colt McCoy. I think Texas still feels like it has something to prove after a loss to Ohio State, and I think they will take it out against a ranked opponent here. Don't look for it to be close.

Final Score: Texas 34 Nebraska 17

#6 Louisville (6-0) @ Syracuse (3-4)

#21 Wisconsin (6-1) @ Purdue (5-2)

N.C. State (3-3) @ Maryland (4-2)

Ole Miss (2-5) @ #15 Arkansas (5-1)

Kansas State (4-3) @ #24 Missouri (6-1)

UCLA (4-2) @ #10 Notre Dame (5-1)

This is a great opportunity for the Irish to make a statement to the country. Even though they are winning, they have not played well yet this season. I look for them to pick it up against a Pac 10 opponent that is without their starting quarterback. If Notre Dame isn't careful this could be a potential upset, but I don't think it will happen.

Final Score: Notre Dame 38 UCLA 20

Iowa (5-2) @ #2 Michigan (7-0)

This is the most dangerous game remaining for Michigan until they play #1 Ohio State, but I think they will handle the Hawkeyes. Iowa will be out to prove something after losing to Indiana last week, which could make this game closer than it should be.

Final Score: Michigan 21 Iowa 13

Alabama (5-2) @ #7 Tennessee (5-1)

#22 Boston College (5-1) @ Florida State (4-2)

This ACC rivlary could end up being the closest game of the week, and I think that it could go either way. I am taking Boston College because I still am not a strong believer in the Seminoles. BC has an experienced quarterback that could help the Eagles get a tough road victory.

Final Score: Boston College 34 Florida State 31

#16 Oregon (5-1) @ Washington St. (4-3)

#19 RUTGERS (6-0) @ PITTSBURGH (6-1)

I have this game in all caps because I see it as the game of the week. Pittsburgh is a team that many people suspect could be a spoiler that ends up in a BCS game, and that road starts against the undefeated Scarlet Nights. It should be a great game, and I think the fact that this game is nationally televised could help the Panthers.

Final Score: Pittsburgh 28 Rutgers 17

#13 Georgia Tech (5-1) @ #12 Clemson (6-1)

This one should be another classic, with these two teams battling for a chance at the ACC title and a BCS bowl. Georgia Tech proved a lot to me the first week when they stuck with Notre Dame, and I see them as a solid ball club. Clemson is also a great team, but I think that with Reggie Ball and Calvin Johnson the Yellow Jackets will be too much to handle.

Final Score: Georgia Tech 24 Clemson 21

#23 Texas A&M (6-1) @ Oklahoma St. (4-2)

South Carolina (4-2) @ Vanderbilt (2-4)

I think this game could be closer than people think because of the fact that Vandy shocked Georgia last week. I think the Gamecocks will pull it out in the end, but expect a good game.

Final Score: South Carolina 34 Vanderbilt 24

Colorado (1-6) @ #20 Oklahoma (4-2)

This it another game that I could see being closer than the teams look on paper. Oklahoma lost their star running back last week, which could mean they come out and rally like Louisville has done, or they will pack it in. Colorado has hung in with some good teams this year but have just had some tough losses.

Final Score: Oklahoma 27 Colorado 17

Washington (4-3) @ #11 California (6-1)

Top stories in sports

By Justin Albers
basketballss132002@yahoo.com
INDIANAPOLIS-
Game 7 Cardinals vs. Mets
The eyes will be on the NLCS tonight as Jeff Suppan will face Oliver Perez. The winner will go to the World Series to play the Tigers, but the question is does either team have what it takes to handle the Tigers? My answer to that question is "NO". I think the Tigers will win the World Series no matter what, but personally I think the Mets will give them the better series. As for tonight's game, it is really hard to pick a winner. It should be a good one.
Will Tiki retire?
Yesterday Giants RB Tiki Barber made a statement saying he expects to retire at the conclusion of the season. Tiki is averaging 109.9 ypg this season, tops in the NFL. He is on track for over 1700 yards and has been a great back of late, which leaves people wondering "Why would he want to retire?" Personally, I think if he said he was going to retire, then he will retire. Since he is playing in New York where things seem to get blown way out of proportion, anything is possible. Remember just last week we heard that Joe Torre was going to be fired and Lou Pinnelia hired, and look how true that was. I think it is too early to speculate, but it is just kind of a juicy story.
Pitt in the BCS?
The Pittsburgh Panthers are 6-1 and looking good since their loss to Michigan State. They have been dominant in every win, but have not really been tested yet. That will all change starting this week. They will take on undefeated #19 Rutgers on Saturday on ESPN HD, then they should be fine until late November when they take on #4 West Virginia and #6 Louisville in consecutive weeks. The good thing for Pitt is that all 3 of those games will be played at home, and if they won all three then they would be guarenteed a BCS bowl. The thing that the Panthers should be upset about is where in their schedule they had to play MSU. Had they played them after the Notre Dame loss, then they would be 7-0 right now and looking to do some damage.

Is it worth it?

By Justin Albers

INDIANAPOLIS- Work is a part of everybody's life, and that is never going to change. You are going to have to do work unless you are a special individual that wins the lottery or has a rich relative around. Otherwise you are going to have to get a job to support a family like everybody else. A topic for debate is "Should you take a job that pays more that you don't enjoy or take one that you enjoy that pays less?"

So many people get a job nowadays because they like the pay. An example of a job like this is a doctor, or an orthodontist. These jobs are very well paid, but very few people actually enjoy what they do. In my opinion, this is a terrible way to live your life. You only get to live life one time for how ever long it may be, and every day should be one that you enjoy. When you wake up every morning worried about the day and dread going into work, you know I am talking about you. Money is just an object and cannot make you happy. As long as you have "enough" money, everything is okay. Plasma TV's, fancy cars, and big houses are not necessary to enjoy life. The important thing is to spend time with your family, and if you are always working then that will not be possible.

Although not everybody agrees, I would recommend that you think of things that you like to do, then apply for jobs in those areas. If you love sports, you could get into writing, commentating, analyzing, and many others. There are many different jobs for every interest, you just have to find them. Don't get a job that you don't like, go after one that you will enjoy day after day, year after year. Life is too short to do something you don't like, no matter how much it may pay.

JJ's Big News

By Justin Albers
basketballss132002@yahoo.com
INDIANAPOLIS- Recently I contacted the sports editor at Topics newspaper, a local newspaper here in Fishers. I told him about myself and about my blog, and he came here and looked at some of my work. He said he was really impressed. He said that he would be interested in publishing my article titled "Winning isn't everything for 4th grade Raiders" where I will have a chance to participate in a guest columnist role. My article may not be in next week's Topics, but I was assured that it will be in there in the next 2 to 3 weeks for sure. I just wanted to share the news with everybody, and thank everybody for the positive feedback on my articles. That really means a lot to me.

Steel City Butt Whooping

By Justin Albers

INDIANAPOLIS- The Steelers looked great on Sunday, and have many analysts second guessing their picks of a Steelerless playoffs. Pittsburgh crushed the Kansas City Chiefs 45-7, and the Steelers showed everything on offense and defense. Big Ben passed the ball only 18 times, completing 15 of them for over 250 yards and his first 2 touchdowns of the year. Willie Parker and Najah Davenport showed the Steelers smash mouth history with a big rushing afternoon. Parker went for 109 yards while Davenport added 74.

The Steelers "D" was no let down. Troy Polamalu led a visious attack, including 10 tackles and an interception that would have gone for a touchdown had he not been pulled down by his hair. That evil defense held Larry Johnson to an average of just 1.5 yards per carry, not bad against an MVP candidate.

I know that it is only one game, but it appears that the Steelers are back. Last week I made the bold prediction that the Steelers were going to repeat as super bowl champions, and for the first time all season the Steelers are giving me a reason for that pick. As long as Big Ben's confidence stays up, the Steelers should be in the playoffs. Especially since the Bengals and the Ravens lost on Sunday, exposing the AFC North as a weaker division than originaly thought. All I know is Sunday's win brought a lot of excitement back to a place that has been lacking positive thoughts all season long.

How to leave a comment

I have had many people tell me that they have not left any comments because they do not know how. All you have to do is follow the things below:
1. At the end of every article there is a section that can be clicked on that says "0 comments". You click on that and then a section pops up for you to type your comment. For the name you can just click on anonymous, and that will be fine. It is as simple as that. You do not have to be a blogger or pay any money or anything like that. Leave comments as often as you would like.

Hoosier Hysteria

By Justin Albers
basketballss132002@yahoo.com
INDIANAPOLIS- It was a weekend to remember in Bloomington. Probably the greatest weekend in years for Indiana University, and it was not limited to one sport. On Friday IU got the news that Eric Gordon was going to decommitt to Illinois and recommitt to Indiana, not to mention all the excitement there was at Midnight Madness. Saturday the Hoosiers got even bigger news as they knocked of #15 Iowa in a football game.
In the past few weeks sportswriter Terry Hutchens has been asked the question "Why doesn't IU get rid of their football team?" This question is not that far out in left field as the Hoosiers have been defeated by Southern Illinois and UCONN this season. Nobody believed in their football program, but that didn't stop Terry Hoeppner from taking his team into the game Saturday. The Hoosiers shocked the Iowa Hawkeyes in a 31-28 upset. Iowa was nearly a 3 touchdown favorite in the game, but great performances by Kellen Lewis and James Hardy gave the Hoosiers a chance. The entire team had a great performance and brought bowl hope back to Bloomington. IU is now 4-3 and needs just 2 more wins to become bowl eligiable. They are 2-1 in the Big Ten, not bad for a team that was humiliated 52-17 against Wisconsin in the first conference game of the season. The Hoosiers will need a real miracle last week when they go into Columbus to play #1 Ohio State.

Winning isn't everything for 4th grade Raiders

By Justin Albers

Fishers, Ind.- How would you define success for fourth grade football players? Would you define it as playing only the very best players in order to win a trophy, or would you define it as playing together as a team and having fun whether you win or lose? The fourth grade Raiders in the Hamilton Southeastern youth football league would choose #2.

The Raiders were unable to win a game this season, which many people would consider a dud of a season. Not this team. The fourth graders had just as much energy running through a tunnel of parents at the end of the season as they did at the start. These young kids had a good time and made some new friends, which is the real goal in youth sports. At the end of the day the win/loss column means nothing. When these kids remember back to when they played youth football they will remember how much fun they had, and will care little about their record. This is an experience they will never forget.

As a fourth grader I participated in youth football and basketball just like these kids. I knew many of my peers who were under extreme pressure from their parents, and came into the game every week extremely nervous. The parents would yell every play, trying to push their kids to be the best, but these same kids were the ones that ended up giving up sports before junior high. When you are under pressure from your parents, it takes all the fun out of sports. Sometimes people forget that the point of sports is to allow kids to get away from schoolwork and have some fun. The more fun kids have at a young age, the more they will want to be a part of sports when they are older. So commonly I see kids who have been burned out on sports so early in their life which is just too bad. There is no reason in the world why kids should be too nervous to go to their football game, or too afraid to tell their parents how they feel.

Because of babysitting duties I was only able to see the Raiders play 3 or 4 times this season. The games I did see I was extremely impressed with the effort of the players. When I looked at the Raiders team compared to some of the others, I could tell they were undersized. When that happens at this age, your effort definately has to be there and it was. The best effort I saw all season was in today's game against the Colts. I could really tell how bad the kids wanted to win the game, and I was definately pulling for them. It was a tough loss but a brilliant effort. I told my brother Patrick all year how much he needed to block, and I finally saw him blocking somebody today which really excited me. I would next like to give out my own awards from the game today:

"O" line- You guys did an outstanding job getting off the ball and pushing the Colts back. You opened up some real holes for the backs to run through and I was impressed. When you are able to run a QB sneak 3 or 4 times in a row successfully, that is a real compliment to you guys.

Jacob Totman- You are an outstanding player young man. The touchdown run that you had today was magnifcent with a juke and everything. I love the effort you give each and every play and how you play at 110% the whole game. You are not afraid of anybody and go out there and give your all 100% of the time. Congrats on a great season!

Joel Wilcox- Congrats on making the all star team Joel. You were great on the line this season and always worked your butt off. I appreciate the effort that you gave.

Coach Wilcox and Coach Reed- You guys stuck with this team and improved them every week which was impressive. You were the right coaches for these kids and you really did a great job this season. All of the parents greatly appreciate your time and effort this season.

The rest of the Raider nation- Raiders, everybody else had a great season as well. Thank you guys for giving your best effort the entire season, and I hope that you will go out for football again next season.

Parents- This is one of the strongest support systems I have seen a youth team have. Some teams have problem parents that yell at the refs or coaches, but we didn't have that on this team. Remember to push your kids, but not too hard. You always want them to have fun, so give them praise and try to keep yelling to a minimum.

Sorry Illini, IU is back on the map

By Justin Albers
basketballss132002@yahoo.com
INDIANAPOLIS- As I walked in the door after school on Friday, I told my mom "This is the best Friday the 13th of my life". I had recently been informed the news that Eric Gordon had decommitted to Illinois, and was not going to be a Hoosier. For those of you who are out of state and have not heard of Gordon, he is arguably the top player in the nation in next year's class. He is currently a senior at North Central High School in Indianapolis.
On September 2nd I attended an IU football game with sportswriter Terry Hutchens, which just happened to be the weekend that Derrik Rose and Gordon were making unofficial visits to IU. I saw Gordon in person, but I honestly did not think that he would change his mind and come to Indiana. After talking to Terry I would have guessed that the Hoosiers had a better chance of getting Derrik Rose then Gordon because of the incident that occured with John Calipari in Memphis.
As for my opinion about the whole situation, I am extremely excited. My dad's first reaction to the situation was that IU shouldn't have continued to recruit Gordon and that EJ should have honored his committment. Bull Crap. Until Gordon had signed, IU had every right to recruit him as long as it was okay with the family. Eric Gordon Sr. had said that they wanted to hear what IU had to offer after Sampson took the job as head coach. I do not think that Kelvin or any of the IU coaching staff was at fault in this situation, and I don't think that they really did anything wrong. Bruce Weber is going to feel that way, but who really cares. This is some of the biggest news for IU sports in a long time, and could put them back on the map for a national championship.

Saturday's Big Games

By Justin Albers
basketballss132002@yahoo.com
INDIANAPOLIS- I wouldn't call it Separation Saturday, but there are some big games tomorrow, some could be upsets. Below I have broken down 5 of the bigger ones.

1. #2 Florida @ #11 Auburn
The game of the week in all of college football, this one should be a dandy. Auburn is coming off of a humiliating loss the Arkansas last week, and playing in front of there home crowd could be large. Florida has played some of the best football of any team this year, and I believe their multi-dimensional offense will be too much for Auburn. It may come down to the fourth quarter, but the Gators will come out on top.
Final Score: Florida 38 Auburn 24

2. #19 Missouri @ Texas A&M
To tell you the truth, I don't know a whole lot about either team. Texas A&M gave a good Texas Tech team a good game, and I expect them to give Missouri the same. Look for this to be one of the closest games of the day, and perhaps an upset brewing.
Final Score: Texas A&M 34 Missouri 20

3. #4 Michigan @ Penn State
This game could be much closer then most people expect. The fact that Penn State is playing at home is huge. It could be a cold environment, and when that happens anything is possible. Not to mention the fact that Wolverine star WR Mario Manningham will not be on the field. I see this game going down to the wire, with the possibility of an upset.
Final Score: Michigan 17 Penn State 13

4. #24 Rutgers @ Navy
I know this may look like a game between teams you know nothing about, but this one has the potential to be good. Rutgers is one of the few remaining undefeated teams, and Navy has surprised many with their 5-1 record. I see this one being close with Rutgers falling from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Final Score: Navy 41 Rutgers 31

5. #1 Ohio State @ Michigan State
The only reason why I put this one on here is because the game is played in East Lansing. It is really hard to tell what Spartan team we are going to see, because it could be the team that had Notre Dame, or it could be the team that was beaten by Illinois. If John L. Smith can get his boys to bring it then it might be within 20 points.
Final Score: Ohio State 38 Michigan State 17

ODDS

By Justin Albers
basketballss132002@yahoo.com
INDIANAPOLIS- I am going to start a section of my blog where I put some situations out there and then I give you my odds of them happening. You can send email me or leave a comment with your personal opinion.

MLB
1. Odds of A-Rod in the Bronx next season.
No matter how many times A-Rod says that he loves New York and he will be back next season, I don't buy any of it. When you are criticized and booed for an entire season, there is no way in the world that you want to be back for another season in the same city. I don't think he wants to be back, and I don't think there is a very good chance of him coming back. 33%

2. Odds of the Cubs with a winning record next season.
The future in Chicago is not looking bright at this point, but to really know how they are going to perform next season we need to know who will be their next manager. They do have some good talent in Lee, Rameriz, and Zambrano, but I just don't think they will have have the pitching rotation next season to be a contender. 42%

3. Odds of Cardinals winning the World Series this year.
The Cardinals have surprised so many people throughout the year. Everybody expected them to have a great season way back in April, and it looked that way early. Throughout the season they had several stretches where I didn't think they would make the playoffs. The Astros challenged them for the Division title at the end, and the Cardinals limped into the playoffs to say the least. Then they pounded the Padres into the ground and now look at the Mets who seem to be in the same situation as them. Neither team has any great pitching, but both teams have power. I see the Cardinals in the World Series, but not winning it. 30%

NBA
1. Odds of a Heat repeat.
Miami returns much of its team from last year, and I think they have a pretty good chance of repeating. Chicago will be tough but I still think the Heat have too much for them to handle. With Wade and Shaq on the same team you are always going to have a chance. 46%

2. Odds of Stephen Jackson being forgiven by the fans.
This is a no brainer. You go out at 3:00 in the morning when you have practice the next day, and you get in a fight. Then we find out that you have a gun and you hanging out with a guy that has marijuna in his car. Of course that wasn't his pot because an NBA player is believed when you find it in his car and he says it isn't his. Anyway nobody like Jackson before, and nobody likes him now. 0%

3. Odds of Nash 3peating as MVP
Steve Nash makes everybody around him better, there is no doubt about it. He doesn't put up the PPG numbers like many MVP's from the past, but MVP does not stand for leading scorer. In most leagues MVP is interpreted in the wrong way, with many people thinking that it means the best player. MVP stands for most valuable player, which means most valuable to the team. When you make everybody around you better it makes you the MVP in the league, which is why I am very happy that Nash has won MVP the last 2 years. I don't think he will be the 3peat, not with Lebron around. 20%

NFL
1. Odds of Bears going 16-0 this season.
Chicago has a pretty easy schedule all the way through, and have looked flawless so far this season. I think they have the best chance to go undefeated of anybody in the last 10 years, and I really do believe they could do it. 51%

2. Odds of Raiders going 0-16
Oakland is bad, real bad. They have gotten the crap beaten out of them by almost every team in the league, including the struggling 49ers. I don't know if it is really possible for a team to go an entire season without a win, but if it were the Raiders would do it. 50%

3. Odds of Colts winning the Super Bowl
I am one of the few people that live in Indianapolis that is not a Colts fan. I have never believed that the Colts could win the Super Bowl, and I still don't. Peyton Manning has never proven that he can win that "big game" so nothing makes me think he will be able to do that this season. Not to mention they are terrible at defending the run and running the ball. 2%

4. Odds of the Steelers in the playoffs
Pittsburgh WILL be in the playoffs. They will go on a serious run just like they did last season, and they will be the underdog again. All they needed was for people to say that they couldn't do it, just like last season. 99.999999%

Weighing in on the NFL

By Justin Albers
basketballss132002@yahoo.com
INDIANAPOLIS- I have yet to give you my opinion on the NFL season, so I am going to talk about the big news not only from this week but also from the season.
Bears on fire
This is one of the great stories of the NFL in this early season. The Bears are 5-0, and unlike the undefeated Colts, they have taken care of their opponents. The Colts have won 26-21, 21-14, 31-28, 14-13, and 43-24. The average line on all of those games was just under 10 points per game. The Bears on the other hand have had victories of 26-0, 34-7, 19-16, 37-6, and 40-7. The average line in those games was just 6 points. Even though the stats do stand that way, the only thing that matters at the end is the 5-0 record, which both teams hold. The point I am trying to make is that the Bears are the best team in the NFL, and with their killer new offense I look for it to stay that way.
Colts lose Simon for season
Cory Simon was a big part of the Eagles postseason success in the early T.O. era in Philadelphia. Last season he helped the Colts to a 14-2 regular season record, but he will not be a part of any success this season. Cory Simon will miss the rest of the season for the Colts due to an illness that Colts President Bill Polian says is not life threatening. The 300 lb. DT will be a big loss for the Colts considering that they are the second worst team in the NFL at defending the rush.
Steelers still slumping
When a team wins a super bowl, many people who were not fans before become fans of that team. We saw that happen with the Steelers. When the Pittsburgh boys won the super bowl last season, everybody was jumping on the bandwagon, which was funny because when the playoffs started everybody was hating on the Steelers. Well, everybody has jumped off the bandwagon at this point. The Steelers are 1-3, and their chances of making the playoffs look slim to none. QB Ben Roethlisberger has not been the same, and his recent play leaves you wondering if he ever will. The Steelers have a pretty medeoker remaining schedule with 3 crucial division games. They have to play at the Bengals and have two matchups with Baltimore. Other than that they have a tough game at Carolina, but the rest are very winable games. They will play Oakland, Cleveland (2), Tampa Bay, New Orleans, Kansas City, and Atlanta. One thing is for sure, the Steelers cannot afford any more losses.
T.O. will never change
Did anybody watch the Eagles vs. Cowboys showdown yesterday? Well what I saw was Terrell Owens being the same old person. In the fourth quarter Owens was underthrown by QB Drew Bledsoe, and you could tell he wasn't happy. If that happens a couple more times, we are going to see yet another T.O. outburst that leads to him getting in trouble. You just watch.
My Power Rankings and Predictions
NFC

Irish Struggle Early, crush Stanford

By Justin Albers

INDIANAPOLIS- It was a sight that we have seen often from Notre Dame this season. Saturday the Irish had yet another slow start, and failed to put Stanford away in the first half. Notre Dame got the ball first, and had a drive that their offense really needed. They went 91 yards on 16 plays to put themselves up 7-0 early. The Cardinal moved the ball well on the next drive, but stalled once they got to the Notre Dame 4 yard line. They settled for a field goal to make it 7-3 after the first quarter of play.

The second quarter was very quiet, with nobody scoring until the final minute. Notre Dame put together a nice 2 minute drill type drive, and scored a touchdown with 29 ticks remaining in the first half. The scoring play was a 15 yard pass from Brady Quinn to Rhema Mcknight, giving Quinn his 2nd TD pass of the day.

Notre Dame's defense started to dominate in the second half, coming up with sacks at big times. On Notre Dame's initial drive of the second half, they went 76 yards in 6 plays and scored a touchdown on a 32 yard Darius Walker run. Walker accounted for most of the yardage on that drive, and helped the Irish to put Stanford away. Nobody else was able to score until Carl Gioia added to Notre Dame's lead with a 35 yard field goal at the end of the 3rd quarter.

It didn't take long for Stanford to get on the board in the fourth quarter, in fact in only took them 33 seconds. The Cardinal went 80 yards on just 4 plays, the scoring play being a halfback pass from Anthony Kimble to Kelton Lynn that covered 57 yards. Stanford was back within 2 touchdowns, but Notre Dame made sure they didn't get any comeback ideas. The Irish put together a 12 play 77 yard drive and put it in the end zone on a 1 yard TD pass from Quinn to TE John Carlson. Notre Dame went back up 21 points, and that is the way that it finished. Final Score: ND 31 Stanford 10

JJ's Grades

Notre Dame had another slow start, which worries me a little bit. I think they really need to get working in this off week and come back strong against UCLA because the Bruins have a talented team this year. They can't be looking ahead to USC quite yet.

Pass Offense- B

Brady Quinn may have had good numbers, but against a defense like Stanford's his numbers should have been great. It looks like his timing is starting to improve, but he hasn't proven that he can complete the deep ball yet this season.

Rush Offense- B

Even though Darius Walker ended up with a bunch of yards, Notre Dame struggled to run the ball in the first half. Stanford has one of the worst defenses in the country, so every Irish running back should have had a good day. Walker is as deep as Notre Dame gets at the position, which is a cause for concern in South Bend.

Overall Offense-B

The offense had a decent day, but when you are playing a team like Stanford you shouldn't have to even dress a punter. Notre Dame scored on most of their drives, but not all of them. This is a game where they should have been able to put up more points, but a win is a win.

Pass Defense- B+

Despite a slow start, Notre Dame's defense really got in going in the second half. Trent Edwards only threw the ball 13 times, so it is hard to really grade the Irish defense. The one play that they did get burnt on went for a 57 yard touchdown. The Notre Dame defense is susceptible to the trick play, just another thing for them to work on this week.

Rush Defense-C+

Notre Dame was giving up huge chunks of yards to running backs that never get any yards. I was really disappointed with the Irish rush defense, and that is definitely something that they need to improve on. Every running back that they have played this year has run all over them, and that really needs to stop if they want a chance at a BCS bowl.

Overall Defense- B-

The Cardinal does not really have an offensive threat, but besides the trick play the Notre Dame defense played pretty well. The defense is obviously the weakest part of the Irish team, so I think that the rush is something they really need to work on for the next 2 weeks. They have to learn to stop the run before they play UCLA, Navy, or USC.

Key Statistics:

The Notre Dame defense has given up 807 yards rushing this season, an average of 134.5 yards per game.

The combined record of Notre Dame's opponents so far this season is 22-14, the remaining opponents have a combined record of 20-11.

Key Players:

Notre Dame:

Brady Quinn 27/37 232 yards 3 TD 0 INT
Darius Walker 25 carries 153 yards 1 TD
Jeff Samardzija 7 rec 50 yards 1 TD

John Carlson 6 rec 38 yards 1 TD

Rhema McKnight 5 rec 62 yards 1 TD

Breaking down SEC Saturday and beyond

By Justin Albers
basketballss132002@yahoo.com
INDIANAPOLIS- Saturday should be another great day for college football, with the 2 big games coming out of the SEC. Let's take a look at the big games for the day.
#9 LSU @ #5 FLORIDA
This is definately the game of the day in college football. Flordia, as everyone knows, has a brutal next 3 weeks and if they can beat LSU then that would give them a huge boost. LSU has Heisman candidate Jemarcus Russel, but they do not have a running game whatsoever. Florida has showed their impressive offense consisting of 2 quarterbacks that are worthy of the starting job. It will be close, but I think the Gators will get the job done.
Final Score: Florida 17 LSU 13
#13 Tennesee @ #10 Georgia
There are only two things in this game that I think will keep Georgia in it. One is their great defense, and two is their crowd. Georgia has not performed well early in the season, especially on the offensive side of the ball. I see Tennesee taking control of this one and establishing them as one of the premier teams in the SEC.
Final Score: Tennesee 24 Georgia 10
#7 Texas @ #14 Oklahoma
Texas comes into the game at 4-1, but they lost the one real test that they have had this season against Ohio State. Oklahoma is still playing with a chip on their shoulder after a controversial loss against Oregon. I predict Oklahoma blowing this one open and taking control of the Big 12.
Final Score: Oklahoma 37 Texas 17
#11 Oregon @ #16 California
Even though Oregon really didn't beat Oklahoma, they are still undefeated and have been very impressive early in the season. California has been equally impressive, but come into the game at 4-1. I feel that this will be the closest game of the day, perhaps coming down to the very last play.
Final Score: Oregon 34 California 31
Michigan State @ #6 Michigan
You are probably wondering why in the world I am putting this game on here. I think that this one will either be really close, or a terrible blowout. We'll find out if John L. Smith prepared his team better this week then last week against Illinois, but the Wolverines still take this one big.
Final Score: Michigan 38 Michigan State 21
Stanford @ Notre Dame
Stanford looks way overmatched in this game, but I have heard people argue that this game might be close. Stanford gave Notre Dame a great game last season, but I think the Irish will be prepared. We'll see if their defense can do anything against one of the worst offeneses in the nation.
Final Score: Notre Dame 44 Stanford 10

Thoughts on Dusty
Dusty Baker will not be back with the Cubs next season, and honestly I am a little dissapointed. My personal opinion on Dusty always was that he was a good manager who, with time, could take them to the playoffs. Dusty had to deal with all the bad luck and injuries this season, but he never complained and still put a team out there everyday. I do think that the Cubs management made the correct decision however, because you cannot expect to keep your job after a 66-96 season. I just don't see a bright spot for the Cubs in the next couple of years, unless they develop a pitching rotation and stick with it.
Cubs deadline trades
Neifi Perez- Current team Detroit Tigers (in playoffs)
Greg Maddux- Current team Los Angeles Dodgers (in playoffs)
Todd Walker- Current team San Diego Padres (in playoffs)

Why not the Phillies?
I don't know how the rest of the country feels, but I was actually very dissapointed when the Phillies did not make the playoffs. Philly has one of the most exciting teams in baseball, with THE best player in the game. Ryan Howard will not be in the playoffs despite his league leading 58 HR and 149 RBI. Chase Utley was also up there in the RBI standings, not to mention his huge hitting streak that had everybody excited in the middle of the season. The Philies traded away Bobby Abreu at the deadline because they did not expect to have a chance at the playoffs. Had they not made they move, they might be in the playoffs.

Notre Dame wins, but does not impress

By Justin Albers
basketballss132002@yahoo.com
INDIANAPOLIS- The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame are now 4-1, and still have their BCS hopes alive after a 35-21 win over Purdue. Notre Dame's offense looked pretty good, but the defense was absolutely unacceptable. They cannot expect to win many games playing like that.
The Irish scored on their opening drive of the game. They established the run on that drive, involving RB Darius Walker on all put one of the plays. WR George West scored his first touchdown of the season on a reverse to give ND a 7-0 early lead. Purdue would answer late in the first quarter on a 7 yard Kory Sheets TD run. Notre Dame came right back just before the end of the quarter with a 13 yard Darius Walker run to give the Irish a 14-7 lead after the opening quarter.
The Notre Dame defense held Purdue on the next drive, and the offense was able to punch it in again. This time it was a 5 yard pass from Brady Quinn the Rhema McKnight to give the Irish some breathing room with 8:50 to go in the first half. The defense continued to hold later in the second, giving Notre Dame the ball back right before the half. The Irish marched the ball all the way down the field, but then brought on the field goal unit on 4th down from the 6 yard line. Jeff Samardzija faked the field goal and took it in for a Notre Dame touchdown with 1:22 to go in the half. It looked like the Irish were going to go into the locker room with a nice 21 point lead at the half, but not so. The defense gave up an 88 yard touchdown pass from Curtis Painter to Selwyn Lymon to cut the lead to 14.
The third quarter was quiet, the only score being a 12 yard touchdown pass from Brady Quinn the Rhema McKnight. Purdue would add a touchdown with 7:16 to go in the game, but they would not make the game interesting at the end. The Irish were on top of a 35-21 final score.
Despite the win, I am still very nervous about the Notre Dame team, and I really don't see them in a BCS bowl at this point. There is no way to beat a team like USC when your defense is giving up almost 500 yards to a team like Purdue. This was a game where the Irish secondary needed to prove that they were not going to hold the team down, and they were just unable to do that. The secondary was burnt on multiple plays, mainly the 88 yard pass to end the half. A win is a win, but the Irish do not impress me right now.
