INDIANAPOLIS- It was a weekend to remember in Bloomington. Probably the greatest weekend in years for Indiana University, and it was not limited to one sport. On Friday IU got the news that Eric Gordon was going to decommitt to Illinois and recommitt to Indiana, not to mention all the excitement there was at Midnight Madness. Saturday the Hoosiers got even bigger news as they knocked of #15 Iowa in a football game.
In the past few weeks sportswriter Terry Hutchens has been asked the question "Why doesn't IU get rid of their football team?" This question is not that far out in left field as the Hoosiers have been defeated by Southern Illinois and UCONN this season. Nobody believed in their football program, but that didn't stop Terry Hoeppner from taking his team into the game Saturday. The Hoosiers shocked the Iowa Hawkeyes in a 31-28 upset. Iowa was nearly a 3 touchdown favorite in the game, but great performances by Kellen Lewis and James Hardy gave the Hoosiers a chance. The entire team had a great performance and brought bowl hope back to Bloomington. IU is now 4-3 and needs just 2 more wins to become bowl eligiable. They are 2-1 in the Big Ten, not bad for a team that was humiliated 52-17 against Wisconsin in the first conference game of the season. The Hoosiers will need a real miracle last week when they go into Columbus to play #1 Ohio State.
