INDIANAPOLIS- It was a great effort, but it was just not enough to get a win. The Cubs young starting pitcher Juan Mateo was shaky early, and that caused for the defeat. In the first inning Mateo gave up 4 runs, and had the Cubs in a 4-0 hole. Mateo would end up going 7 innings, not giving up another run after the 1st.
"Overall Juan did a good job, Cubs radio announcer Bob Brenly said. "If it wasn't for that first inning he would have posted a shutout."
The Cubs were unable to score until the 6th inning when they finally got to Chris Carpenter. Juan Pierre led the inning off with a triple, then Matt Murton drove him in with a single. Rameriz hit a double, then Jacque Jones drove in a run on a ground ball to second. The Cubs trailed 4-2 after 6 innings.
There was no more scoring until the 9th inning when Scott Speizio drove in Yadamir Molina to give the Cardinals a 5-2. In the bottom of the 9th inning Aramis Rameriz led off with a solo home run, his 30th of the year. The Cubs were unable to get any more baserunners after that, and fell to the Cardinals 5-3.
The Cubs had a good effort on Sunday afternoon, unfortunately you did get anything for effort. The Cubs are now 10.5 games out of the wild card, and they really cannot afford to lose any games for a while if they have any hopes at the wild card spot. Rich Hill will take the mound for the Cubs when they play the Phillies on Monday night. He needs to have a quality outing and get the Cubs back on the right foot.
