INDIANAPOLIS- I guess the Cubs should go to 18 innings more often because it worked in this instance. Ryan O'Malley is a guy that had only been pitching okay at best in the minor leagues. The Cubs never would have called him up to start unless something like this occured. Thank goodness that it did. O'Malley went 8 scoreless innings against Houston and was able to get the win thanks to a Michael Barrett home run in the 6th. That home run was the only run recorded in the game, and gave the Cubs their season high tying 4th win in a row.
The Cubs earned only their 4th sweep of the season, 3 of them have been against division opponents. They are now only 9.5 games out of the wild card and 12 games out of the division. Despite how poorly they have played at times this season, they are still right there. What they really need to happen here in the next few days would be to have St. Louis sweep the Reds, then the Cubs sweep St. Louis. That could pull them closer and closer, and with still 41 games to go they can do it. The one huge problem that they need to address is walks. In the last week the Cubs have been giving up way to many walks, and eventually that will come back to hurt them. Ryan O'Malley should be very proud of himself, and he may of just found his way into the major leagues.
